Harold L. Meador, D.D.S., B.S.D, founder of BioCentric Seminars
Harold L. Meador, D.D.S., B.S.D.

Harold L. Meador, D.D.S., B.S.D, is retired from the practice of periodontics but is dedicated to helping people in pain.

While in general practice he was inspired to limit to periodontics by Dr. Balint Orban. He completed his graduate training at Baylor Dental College and joined Dr. Claude Nabers in specialty practice in 1960. There were no automated scalers in those days and the work was very physical. Within a few short months his right arm would go numb from the elbow down by 3:30 p.m. most days. In a survival effort, by simply listening to his body, he created a full-arm-motion instrumentation technique that allowed him to work hard all day in comfort.

He shared this self-taught instrumentation technique with local hygienists in some informal sessions in 1985. They reported a significant reduction in fatigue and pain, with an improvement in self-image and quality of life.

Three years of study and research in ergonomics and orthopaedics confirmed the fact that the premise of the technique was ergonomically sound. It was called the BioCentric Technique, the substance of BioCentric Seminars.

This program has been presented several hundred times to over two thousand hygienists in the US and England.

Due to positive feed-back from those programs, in early 2002, Mr. Wm. O. Butler, Director of Continuing Dental Education, UTHSCSA Dental School asked Dr. Meador to develop an ergonomic program for dental assistants. He interviewed seventy two staff members in twenty six offices. His findings opened a new world of needs of the dental staff. He wrote an article that was published in November 2002, developed a continuing-education program for the office staff, and started doing site visits to help dental offices implement the much needed ergonomically based changes that came from his observations during the study.

In 2001 a large group practice had asked for a program on practical periodontics in general practice. That became another regular program through the C-E department. From that program came the guidelines for evaluating the efficiency of a dental hygiene program.

These last events have expanded the scope of BioCentric Seminars far beyond his vision. See Products and Services for details.

He, his wife Ruth, along with their two children, Linda and Ric and families live in San Antonio, TX. They are active in the Methodist Church, but Hal maintains strong Lutheran roots. They enjoy music, the arts, reading, golf, and fishing (not necessarily in that order). Along with his consulting with the dental industry he is much busier than expected for the retired life, but that is the way he likes it.

Since 1985 he has been involved at UTHSCSA Dental School, in studying and teaching the Biocentric Technique, which is based on ergonomic and orthopaedic principles and how they impact the practicing hygienist. In 1993 a study of patterns of muscle activity in instrumentation techniques helped in understanding how the power strokes used in the BioCentric Technique are helpful in correcting occupational pain. In 1995 a survey of alumni of the course between 1991 and 1995 established the beneficial impact of the Biocentric Technique by reducing pain, increasing production and improving the attitude of hygienists. A videotape with script, and a textbook, "Ergonomics in Pain Management for Dental Professionals Including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" have been developed as background material for the hands-on course that he teaches through the Department of Continuing Dental Education.

The course has been offered at UTHSC San Antonio for several years, at Baylor Dental College in 1998, and UTHSC Houston in 2000. Outside Texas, the course has been presented in many settings, i.e. national and state dental hygiene associations, state dental associations, hygiene schools, large and small private practice groups in the U.S., London and Manchester, England. The technique has been an integral part of the instrumentation curriculum at the University of Arkansas Medical School Department of Dental Hygiene in Little Rock, AK since the 1997-98 school year.

The two expansive events in 2001 & '02 resulted in two more lecture courses (for a total of three) and an on-site service to meet the needs that he observed in his investigation.

BioCentric Seminars started by meeting the needs of hygienists in pain and extended to rest of the dental office staff. Therefore, Dr. Meador has come to think of himself as "The Wounded Healer." This second career in his retirement years has provided some of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences in his professional life. He looks forward to sharing this information with practicing hygienists, dentists, receptionists, chairside assistants and educators at every opportunity.
